A development of 18 family-sized affordable homes in Walton-on-Thames was officially opened by the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor James Vickers this week.
The Thamesmead homes were provided by a partnership of Thames Valley Housing (TVH) and Elmbridge Borough Council, and comprise 11 houses for affordable rent, and 7 homes for part-purchase through the New Build HomeBuy scheme.
Speaking at the event, The Mayor said “Demand for affordable, family-sized homes in the borough is high. TVH has worked closely with the council, and has accurately responded to local housing need with these well designed, modern, attractive homes.”
Tina Bennett and her family are among the happy residents at Thamesmead. They moved into one of the rented homes designed to be wheelchair accessible. It includes a downstairs wet room and internal lift.
Tina said “My 16 year old daughter, Siobhan, is in a wheelchair following an unsuccessful operation to treat her scoliosis earlier this year. Our new home has completely transformed our lives, and has been a god-send for Siobhan. We are really happy in our new home which has given my daughter her freedom again.”
The homes at Thamesmead incorporate a range of sustainable features such as solar panels, improved insulation and water butts, all of which will help to reduce residents monthly utility bills.
Geeta Nanda , TVH CEO said “It’s really satisfying to be able to help local people to buy or rent an affordable home in what is the most expensive local authority in Surrey. Our partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council has provided homes for local people, which they can be proud to live in.”
