Slough residents who are disabled will be taking to the roads for a range of days out, thanks to a grant from a local housing association.
Thames Valley Housing (TVH) has donated £2,500 from its Community Chest Fund to Slough Community Transport and Shopmobility, who organise days out for people who have mobility issues.
Wendy Field, Chief Executive, Slough Community Transport and Shopmobility, said, “We are really grateful to TVH as this money means we can organise even more day trips. Many of our clients enjoy these days out instead of a holiday, since booking a normal holiday that takes into account their particular needs can be very difficult.
“We have a specially adapted minibus so we can arrange trips to different places. Recently we’ve been to Brighton and Millets Farm in Oxfordshire, and we’re going to Buckingham Palace very soon. Anyone who needs it gets a dedicated escort. Once our clients arrive at their destination, they are free to decide what they want to do, whether it’s shopping, eating or visiting an event that might be on”.
John Baldwin, TVH’s Director of Housing, said, “This is a great project. Making sure that people who have mobility issues are able to get out and enjoy different places and venues the way they want to enjoy them, really embodies what Community Chest is all about”.
Thames Valley Housing launched Community Chest in 2007. It is now part of TVH’s Community Investment Strategy, which provides funding to TVH residents, community projects and wider community based charitable programmes working within TVH’s areas. The next round of Community Chest bids will take place in the autumn of 2007.
