Sarah and Sheron - Volunteer Successes
Sarah Cobb and Sheron Wood are just two Thames Valley Housing residents who have hit the job market with a vengeance, thanks to the volunteer experience they gained at the TVH Resident Training and Employment Centre
Sheron Wood, a single mum of two grown up children, has gained a job as the Administrator for the Community Training and Employment Team at Thames Valley Housing, which came up while she was at TVH.
She tells us, “I’m absolutely over the moon I’ve got a job. Volunteering gave me the chance to get experience working in reception, administration, business skills and researching projects. I was interviewed along with everyone else who applied for my post. I wouldn’t have got it; if I hadn’t had the experience volunteering gave me.”
Like Sheron, Sarah Cobb, a single mum of three children, did her volunteering as part of studying NVQ level 2 in Business Administration, and the CIH level 2 Certificate in Housing. Both Sheron and Sarah finish their courses in December 2009.
Sarah said, ‘Volunteering has really helped build up my confidence. Before my children were born, I worked in restaurants and shops because I’d no qualifications. Now, as well as getting qualifications, I’ve had experience too. I’m looking for full time work and I’m really excited about the future.”
She continues. “I’ve really enjoyed being at TVH. You are treated as an equal and everyone is really nice. I’ve actually asked to do some more volunteer work with the Resident Involvement team as I’d like to work in that area.’’
Travel costs and other expenses
Travel by public transport and adult and child care costs will be reimbursed if volunteering at TVH. Travel and care costs may be reimbursed if volunteering with other organisations. This must be agreed by the centre prior to commencing your volunteer placement.
