New Award Means Better Homes for Local People - 14/10/02
Thames Valley Housing has become one of the first housing associations in the country to win a special award for its commitment to improving performance standards. The Construction Clients Charter is a new industry award that recognises organisations which are committed to working in partnership with construction firms to improve standards in their building programme.
TVH currently has a development programme of over 800 affordable homes for rent, shared ownership and key workers, all being built in partnership with construction firms.
In 2000, the Deputy Prime Minister challenged the group of companies who, like us, work with construction firms, to draw up a set of standards that would drive improvements in the whole construction process,explains Yvonne Edgar, Head of Development at Thames Valley Housing. Now these standards have been set, organisations like ourselves need to demonstrate that we meet them in order to achieve Charter Status. The aim of the standards is to encourage organisations involved in the construction process to work in partnership. The standards cover a very broad area, but from a practical point of view, results could include shorter construction time, improved design quality, less disruption to local communities, more environmentally sustainable developments and less waste.
Meeting these standards mean we have a more effective and efficient development programme, and at the bottom line that means we can create more and better homes for people in housing need in our area. We are delighted to be one of the first in the country to achieve this.
