Eco-House at Rushmoor development - 05/09/03
Mayor of Rushmoor Councillor Frank Rust was given a preview of some of the energy-saving devices available at the Eco-House at a site being refurbished by Thames Valley Housing, which opens for a week on Saturday 13 September.

Inventor Nick Mercer was at the house to demonstrate a specially adapted bike that can be used to power light bulbs and appliances. The more energy needed, the harder you need to pedal.

Cllr. Rust had to pedal five times harder to light a conventional light bulb than he did to light a low energy one and said that if everyone had to use pedal power to light their homes, everyone would be keener to fit low energy bulbs!

A free low energy light bulb will be given out to everyone who takes advantage of a free home energy check at the house. Replacing a conventional bulb with a low energy one in a light used for 4 hours a day would save £10 on your annual electricity bill.

Cllr. Rust also used a wind up device to charge his mobile phone. Turning your mobile phone charger off when it is not being used is an easy way of saving energy and money.

The Eco-House is owned by Thames Valley Housing Association and has been kitted out by Rushmoor Council with equipment and displays that give easy ideas on tackling global warming by saving energy and cutting pollution. The house will then be sold for shared ownership and will retain many of its energy saving features.

Paul Juan, Rushmoor Private Sector Housing Manager said, The house is packed with low cost ideas on how to keep warm, save money and protect the environment. If we all make small changes, together we can make a big difference.

The Eco-House is at 16, Hunter Road on the Tower Hill estate in Farnborough and will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm (apart from Wednesday 2pm to 8pm). Entry to the house is free.

Experts from Rushmoor Council and the Solent Energy Efficiency Advice Centre (EEAC) will be on hand to give impartial advice and there will be a prize draw to win an organic hamper and a kitchen appliance with an A rating for energy efficiency.

Hannah Bird, Senior Energy Advisor at Solent EEAC said, The average home produces 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, enough to fill a hot air balloon! But we can all do our bit and now there are grants and discounts available to all homeowners to help make your home an energy saver.
