Deepcut gets quality at an affordable price - 14/10/03
The Worshipful the Mayor of the Borough of Surrey Heath Councillor Ian Sams opened a brand new development of affordable housing built by a partnership of Thames Valley Housing, Peerless Housing Group, Surrey Heath Borough Council and Barratt Southern Counties at Alma Dettingen in Deepcut.

The affordable housing development of 86 homes is part of a much larger development of private homes. The homes are of very high design quality and the affordable housing is scattered throughout the private development. The development as a whole includes a shop and community centre, and play areas and football pitches for the use of local people are under construction.

The affordable homes include flats and houses ranging from 1 bedroom to 3 bedroom, both for rent and for shared ownership. Shared ownership is a scheme where the buyer purchases a percentage of the property, usually 50% or 60%, and pays rent on the remaining share. The buyer can then purchase a further percentage of the property at any time, until they own the property outright.

The majority of the homes have gone to residents of the borough. Property prices in the area have increased greatly over the last 10 years. The average house now costs over £250,000 and rents for a 1 bedroom flat are over £100 per week. It has become increasingly difficult for those born and brought up in the area to purchase or rent a home in their community, near to their families and their places of work.

Half of the properties will be managed by Thames Valley Housing and half will be managed by Peerless Housing Group. Paul Reeves, Chief Executive of Peerless Housing Group, said, This is hoped to be the first of more such partnerships between both Housing Associations to maximise the investment into affordable community housing in the area.
