Work starts at Hammersmith Hospital - 02/12/03
Work has commenced on the construction of 295 units of staff accommodation at the former Burlington Danes school site next door to Hammersmith Hospital on Du Cane Road in north Hammersmith. The £20m capital project will assist the Trust in the recruitment and retention of staff by providing them with good quality, affordable housing near their place of work.
The land was acquired by the Trustees of the Charitable Fund for Charing Cross, Hammersmith and Queen Charlottes Hospital some 5 years ago, and the start of works marks the beginning of the fruition of their aim to see staff accommodation, a nursery and a medical research facility on the site.
Hammersmith Hospitals is the fifth NHS Trust to choose Thames Valley Housing as its preferred partner in delivering a scheme of this kind.
The development will involve the construction of high-specification accommodation to cutting edge design principles. Among the features will be en-suite bathrooms, mini-kitchens, and combined telephone and IT access points in all rooms. A creche, shop, laundrette, visitors accommodation and landscaped recreational area will also be built.
The other partners on the scheme are Willmott Dixon and PRP Architects, using a PPC 2000 Partnering contract. The same three organisations recently completed a 246 unit scheme at Hillingdon Hospital, where the partnering arrangement proved to be extremely beneficial.
Celia Hensman, Chairman of the Charity Trustees, said, "We are absolutely delighted to see five years of discussions and deliberations come to a reality."
Keith Holloway, Chief Executive of Thames Valley Housing, said, "Providing high quality, affordable homes for our key workers is essential to secure London's future sustainability. We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Trustees on this leading edge project."
