Waverley Mayor opens Environmentally-Friendly Affordable Housing Development - 30/11/04
The Mayor of Waverley Borough Council, Councillor Victor Duckett, opened a new development of affordable housing, built using an environmentally- friendly construction technique, at Rural Close in Farnham on Friday 19 November.
The development, which is made up of 30 properties for rent, comprises 6, 1 bedroom maisonettes, 2, 1 bedroom flats, 6, 2 bedroom flats and 16, 2 and 3 bedroom houses. The development has been built by a partnership of Thames Valley Housing, Waverley Borough Council and Kier Partnership Homes.
The houses have been built using the Amphion construction technique. The Amphion Consortium is made up of 17 Housing Associations including Thames Valley Housing, and Kier Partnership Homes, part of the Kier Group, one of the countries largest construction groups. Amphion homes are constructed using a system of pre-fabricated, insulated timber frames which are delivered to the site on a lorry and then erected by a specialist construction team. This process reduces the over-production of materials, reduces the time it takes to build the house, timber is a renewable source and the process is energy efficient and reduces fuel costs.
The road was formerly known as Cobbetts Way and was named after William Cobbett, a journalist and politician who was born in Farnham in 1763, and wrote Rural Rides in 1826, about the southern English Countryside which he toured on horseback. The connection to Cobbett has been maintained in the choice of the name Rural Close.
Keith Holloway, Chief Executive at Thames Valley Housing said, ‘Once more the effectiveness of partnerships in providing high quality, well designed housing is demonstrated. We are delighted to have assisted Waverley Borough Council build 30 urgently needed rented homes that use the latest building techniques and blend successfully into the existing cottage style estate’.
