Success for Do-It-Yourself ASBO application - 07/09/05
Thames Valley Housing has successfully applied for its first anti-social behaviour order (ASBO), against the partner of a Hounslow tenant. The result was achieved without any legal advice or representation in court, thanks to the experience of TVH’s housing team and co-operation and assistance from local authority colleagues.
The man has a history of domestic violence, has made threats to TVH staff and has also threatened to set fire to or blow up his partner’s flat. He has persistently and seriously fly-tipped on the estate.
His partner fled the flat following an incident, and contacted TVH, who not only secured the property but also applied for an interim anti social-behaviour order. Before applying for the order TVH contacted the London Borough of Camden, who were very helpful in advising on their experience in securing ASBOs. As a result TVH were able to apply for the order successfully without using outside legal help. The result provides decisive action against anti-social behaviour at optimum value-for-money.
The order requires than the man:
- Keeps off the estate in question
- Does not intimidate or harass any resident, contractor or staff member, or disturb employees or contractors in normal business
- Does not fly-tip
Residents on the estate have been informed about the terms of the order and asked to report straight away if he is seen on the estate. It is a criminal offence if he breaches the ASBO, and he can be arrested and either fined or sent to prison.
