Affordable Homes ''An Extremely Attractive Development,'' Says Mayor of Wantage - 28/11/05
A development of affordable homes built by Thames Valley Housing at Chapel Close in Wantage, was praised by the Mayor of Wantage, Councillor Julia Reynolds, as "an extremely attractive development’’ when she officially opened the site on Friday 25 November .
The development, which is made up of four 2 and 4 bedroom houses for rent and thirteen 1 and 2 bedroom flats for shared ownership, has been built by a partnership of Thames Valley Housing, Vale of White Horse District Council and Westbury Homes (Holdings) Ltd. It is part of a larger development of 65 homes built by Westbury Homes (Holdings) Ltd.
Shared ownership is a scheme where the purchaser buys a percentage of the property and pays a reduced rent on the remainder. They are able to purchase further shares at any time.
In an area where a 2 bedroom flat can cost £150 per week to rent, and a 2 bedroom house can cost £170,000 to purchase, it is important to provide a range of affordable housing. Keith Holloway, Thames Valley Housing Chief Executive said, "It is vital that as a housing association, we respond to needs of the whole community. The rented accommodation addresses the needs of people on low incomes, whilst shared ownership allows people, who otherwise would not be able to afford it, to get a first foot on the property ladder’’.
