Mayor of Merton Celebrates Start of Construction of 172 Affordable Homes - 06/10/06
The Worshipful, the Mayor of Wimbledon, Councillor Geraldine Stanford attended a celebration to mark the start of construction of 172 affordable homes, at the former Wimbledon Football Ground, Plough Lane, SW19 on Friday 6 July.

The development is being built by a partnership of Thames Valley Housing, The London Borough of Merton and David Wilson Homes. The 172 affordable homes consist of 122 flats for low cost rent and 50 flats for New Build HomeBuy; a scheme where the buyer purchases a percentage of the property and pays a reduced rent on the outstanding percentage.

The affordable homes will be constructed to an Eco Homes rating of ‘’Very good’’. Sustainability has been at the heart of the decision making process and each apartment will receive a voucher for a cycle which they can buy at a local store, along with an Oyster Card with £100 credit. A bus route will be diverted to the site and a new bus lane will be created along the adjacent Durnsford Road.

The affordable homes, were part funded by a Housing Corporation Social Housing Grant of £5,260,000 and are part of a larger development of 570 homes being built by David Wilson Homes, as well as restaurants, offices and a Doctor’s Surgery.

Keith Holloway, Chief Executive, Thames Valley Housing, said, ‘’We are delighted to be working with the London Borough of Merton to provide a range of affordable homes for local residents, for rent and part-purchase, on this major strategic site. The scheme demonstrates the value of partnership, and the quality of the regeneration will have a wide benefit locally.

Ends.
