Councillor for Housing Celebrates City Centre Affordable Homes for Berkshire Residents - 16/03/07
Councillor Mike Orton, Cabinet Member for Housing, celebrated the completion of 21 brand new homes for New Build Homebuy last week. The properties are all for people from Berkshire and include 4 homes for Key Workers and one adapted for a wheelchair user,
The 21 homes are made up of 13, 1 bedroom flats and 8, 2 bedroom flats. There are also 61 homes for private purchase within the development which is just half a mile from the city centre.
The New Build Homebuy properties have been built by a partnership of Thames Valley Housing, Reading Borough Council and Crest Nicolson (Chiltern) Ltd. The development was part-funded by a Housing Corporation Social Housing Grant of £596,557. The homes will provide Berkshire residents on lower incomes with a first foot on the property ladder. By the beginning of 2008, Thames Valley Housing’s successful partnership with Reading Borough Council, will have provided over 160 affordable homes for Berkshire residents in Reading. The other developments, at Skelton Court (Tilehurst Road), East Street and Kennet Island will provide a further 144 homes.
Keith Holloway, TVH Chief Executive said, ‘’These 21 homes are one more example of the successful partnership between Thames Valley Housing and Reading Borough Council. They will provide people in Berkshire on lower incomes with the chance to buy and live in a home that is highly desirable and in a great location.
Councillor Orton said, "These high quality schemes form an important part of Reading's programme to provide a range of social and affordable homes."

Its current investment programme of £3.9 billion for 2006-8 is its biggest ever and is set to provide around 80,000 new affordable homes from housing associations and private developers throughout the country.
