New affordable homes in Walton on Thames, one step closer - 27/03/08
A development of eighteen brand new affordable homes at Thamesmead in Walton on Thames, is one step closer, following the purchase from Elmbridge Borough Council of 0.4 hectares of land by local housing association Thames Valley Housing. The Council chose to dispose of its land-holding, which had lain empty for a number of years, to TVH after they successfully tendered for the site in 2007, impressing the Council with their design.

The low-rise, low-density design allows for 18 family homes, each with substantial gardens, including one 3, bedroom home fully adapted to accommodate a wheelchair. Solar paneling has been incorporated into the design and the orientation of the site makes the most efficient use of sunlight.

TVH obtained planning permission for its proposals in January 2008, and will deliver eleven homes for rent and seven shared-ownership units, aimed at first-time buyers and key workers who cannot afford to buy on the open market. TVH will soon be writing to local residents to advise them of the timetable for construction and it is the hoped that the homes will be completed before the end of next year.

Elmbridge Borough Council's Joint Head of Housing, Jane Bolton said, "The Council is committed to increasing the supply of affordable housing within Elmbridge and the sale of this site marks a significant milestone in the development of Thamesmead, which will provide much-needed family-sized affordable homes".

Keith Holloway, Chief Executive Officer at TVH said, 'We are delighted to have completed the purchase of Thamesmead from Elmbridge Borough Council. This development will provide the Borough with 18 extremely well designed, energy-efficient affordable homes for families on low incomes''.
Housing Associations, working in partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council, will have delivered 135 new affordable homes in the Borough, by the end of March this year.
