Plaque unveiled to celebrate new Tooting key workers homes - 29/04/08
Wandsworth Mayor and guests unveil plaque. Mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor Stuart Thom, says, “I was delighted to be present at this event. These homes are going to make such a significant contribution to NHS staff retention within the Borough.’’

The £37m regeneration project will provide rental accommodation for 557 key workers in the form of studio and one-bedroom self contained apartments and two, three and four-bedroom shared apartments. These properties are rented fully furnished and the rental cost includes gas, water and electricity charges, making them approximately 30% more affordable than renting privately.

St George’s Grove will also offer 78 one and two-bedroom flats for shared ownership under the New Build HomeBuy scheme, a part-buy/part-rent government-led initiative which allows buyers to purchase a percentage of the property and pay a subsidized rent on the remaining percentage.

A nursery, an on-site housing management office and retail outlets will be included as part of the development.

Thames Valley Housing and Wandsworth Council are working on four other developments which will provide a further 132 affordable homes for key workers and non-key workers in the area.

Peter Williams, Chairman of Thames Valley Housing, says “Organisations such as St George’s Hospital need to continuously evolve to provide the best service possible. Thames Valley Housing’s job is to support this, by providing a high standard of well managed accommodation.’’

David Astley, Chief Executive, St George’s Hospital, says, “The new Grove will help us care for the nurses, doctors and other members of our healthcare teams who work so hard to care for patients. They deserve affordable and attractive accommodation with better facilities, and what’s more the improved Grove will allow staff to live within walking-distance of the hospital.

Once completed in September 2009, current residents of St George’s Grove will move into the first phase of homes, which will comprise 380 apartments for rental.

The second phase will be complete by March 2011 and includes the remaining apartments.

Nominations for affordable homes in Wandsworth are made by the council’s home ownership team. To register or to find out more information on the options available for first time buyers contact the team on (020) 8871 6016 or visit www.wandsworth.gov.uk/homeownership
