TEDx provides a global stage for teenagers in Hounslow

DSC_0290Thames Valley Housing (TVH) supported Spark! in running the successful TEDxYouth global event to inspire and empower young people in Hounslow.

On 10th February 2016 at West Thames College, ten Year 12 (aged 16/17) students from six Hounslow schools took part in the event, talking on any subject of their choice within a general ‘Made in the Future’ theme. Talks included the future of music, mathematics, and gaming whilst others focused on the class system, Islamophobia, and money. An audience of 100 local young people joined them.

Barry Malki, Community Investment Manager said, “TVH donated £3000 from its Community Chest fund last summer, which enabled students to attend training sessions that prepared them for this event. Through taking part, participants have developed not only important employability skills such as time-management, leadership, teamwork, and self-discipline but also life skills, such as confidence and communication. We believe that investing in projects such as this, which develop skills and raise the aspirations of young people, is key to building communities.”

Ruby Mir, director of Spark! said “We are really grateful for the support of Thames Valley Housing Association, which helped to make this project the success it was. We were also thrilled that Geeta Nanda and members of the TVHA Community team were able to join us on the day, and look forward to continued collaboration.”

The videos of the talks will be available on the TED website.

About Thames Valley Housing Association:

Thames Valley Housing is based in Twickenham, West London and delivers housing for a wide range of people. Founded in 1966, the association manages and administers over 15,000 properties in London, Middlesex, Berkshire, Surrey, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Wiltshire, and Sussex. Thames Valley Housing aims to meet the aspirations of all our customers and residents, helping them to get the home they want or need at the outset, providing further opportunities to move or buy later should they wish. It provides affordable rented homes, shared ownership, and key worker accommodation, including the staff accommodation for eight NHS Trusts.

In order to generate a profit to help fund our social purpose, we also have a market rent business called Fizzy Living; and a joint venture to build housing for sale, called Opal.

About Spark!:

Spark! organises and delivers employability and enterprise activities for students across the London Borough of Hounslow and beyond. They work with more than 2,000 volunteers each year at school events, and always welcome more. Please contact info@sparklondon.org if you’re interested!

Their ultimate objective is to have a positive impact on young people’s lives, providing programmes which engage and energise young people and demonstrate how to begin their working lives.
