Thames Valley Housing (TVH) supported Spark! in running the successful TEDxYouth global event to inspire and empower young people in Hounslow.
On 10th February 2016 at West Thames College, ten Year 12 (aged 16/17) students from six Hounslow schools took part in the event, talking on any subject of their choice within a general ‘Made in the Future’ theme. Talks included the future of music, mathematics, and gaming whilst others focused on the class system, Islamophobia, and money. An audience of 100 local young people joined them.
Barry Malki, Community Investment Manager said, “TVH donated £3000 from its Community Chest fund last summer, which enabled students to attend training sessions that prepared them for this event. Through taking part, participants have developed not only important employability skills such as time-management, leadership, teamwork, and self-discipline but also life skills, such as confidence and communication. We believe that investing in projects such as this, which develop skills and raise the aspirations of young people, is key to building communities.”
Ruby Mir, director of Spark! said “We are really grateful for the support of Thames Valley Housing Association, which helped to make this project the success it was. We were also thrilled that Geeta Nanda and members of the TVHA Community team were able to join us on the day, and look forward to continued collaboration.”
The videos of the talks will be available on the TED website.
