Launchpad Reading

Project: Severe Weather Emergency Project – Reading

Funded: £1000

This project runs during the coldest winter periods providing people with nowhere to stay with a bed, hot breakfast and a packed lunch and, importantly, support. Last year the project helped 88 people, 61 of whom were found housing solutions.

Bid Summary: Funding is sought to support Launchpad’s role in SWEP 2013. When temperatures drop below 0°C for three or more consecutive nights, there is a statutory duty to provide a bed for everyone who has nowhere to stay. This usually means setting up temporary bed spaces in hostels but does not extend to providing a warm place for some of the day or access to support. We aim to fill that gap by taking over a local church hall (offered free of charge) and running a Breakfast Club where we provide those who have slept in the hostels with a hot breakfast, packed lunch and access to support to help them find solutions to their problems – this may include mental health support, access to a GP, alcohol and drug support etc. Funding is required to purchase food, kitchen equipment and to support the project volunteers.
