Bid Summary:

  • Free swimming, in Rushmoor, has been organised for the last couple of years, during the summer holidays, for 16 years and under. It has been very successful with 4,000 young people registering in 2012 and taking part in 14,260 swims!
  • The Council has been supporting free swimming since the Government funded free swimming in 2008, which ended in August 2010 and RBC along with other service providers and partners continued with the much needed scheme.
  • The figures for 2012 show a big increase in free swimming – up 274% from the previous year! We would like to continue this diversionary activity during the summer holidays and are looking for partners to support the project. With offering free swimming it allows young people to swim without the cost, which is quite often a barrier. Currently swimming costs £2.80 per swim for juniors.
  • The aim of the free swimming is to provide local youngsters with the opportunity of taking part in a positive activity and providing something for them to participate in during the long summer holidays.
